IMPORTANT NOTICE:  This is a volunteer, non-salaried position in the US Coast Guard Auxiliary.  As a volunteer position, there are no required minimum hours that you need to perform.  Each Auxiliarist is expected to provide as much or as little time as they can make available to perform their position tasks and participate in US Coast Guard Auxiliary functions.  The Auxiliary will provide training to person filling this requirement.

Position Description:

The Assistant Public Affairs Officer will assist the Flotilla Staff Officer for Public Affairs in performing the following. This is a non-operational position.

• Develop and direct an organized program of activities to obtain publicity for boating safety and Auxiliary. recruiting.
• Maintain close liaison with local Coast Guard public affairs officers, cooperating in every way to establish effective working relationships and coordination of the Coast Guard's and Auxiliary's efforts with the newspaper, radio and television media to improve coverage of Coast Guard and Auxiliary activities.
• Establish an effective working relationship with the newspapers, radio and television news media in a manner which will facilitate maximum coverage of the Auxiliary's activities.
• Constantly look for new ways to get the Auxiliary message to the public.
• Encourage and oversee participation in the National Safe Boating Week activities by all Auxiliary members in the flotilla.
• Establish and oversee a program to have a boating safety booth at all home shows and boat shows in the area, whenever practical.
• Assist with advertising and publicity.
• Cooperate with the FSO-HR to publicize the Auxiliary and to attract new members.
• Cooperate obtaining action photos of flotilla activity for publication in the division, district, and national publications, and for entering in any division, district, and national photo contests. 
• Retain a file of photos received for possible future use.
• Prepare regular notices to the flotilla membership to keep everyone abreast of new developments in your program area. 
• Review the appropriate AUXDATA II data at least quarterly to track the status of the Flotilla's public affairs program.

Vessel Examiners

IMPORTANT NOTICE:  This is a volunteer, non-salaried position in the US Coast Guard Auxiliary.  As a volunteer position, there are no required minimum hours that you need to perform.  Each Auxiliarist is expected to provide as much or as little time as they can make available to perform their position tasks and participate in US Coast Guard Auxiliary functions.

Position Description:

This is a position that interacts with the public and therefore requires training and maturity.  When performing Vessel Safety Checks you will work directly with boat owners in your community. This is a non-operational position.

The vessel safety check program helps to achieve voluntary compliance with federal and state recreational boating safety laws, particularly regarding the carriage of safety equipment. It also raises boaters’ awareness of safety issues through one-on-one contact by vessel examiners. Using training acquired through study and mentored vessel safety checks, the vessel examiner will be able to educate boaters through direct, face-to-face boating safety information exchanges. With this knowledge, it is hoped that recreational boaters will become more involved in maintaining and operating their boats in a safe manner, taking boating safety courses to increase their knowledge and skills in boating, and promoting safe boating to others.

Position Requirements:

• You must join the US Coast Guard Auxiliary.  
• Membership is open to any citizen of the U.S. and its territories and possessions who is seventeen (17) years of age or older.  There is no mandatory maximum age.  
• Membership is predicated on full and successful completion of the Auxiliary enrollment application, including passing the New Member Exam.
• No specific physical standards must be met in order to be eligible to enroll in the US Coast Guard Auxiliary.
• Any Auxiliarist, regardless of physical limitations, may participate in training to achieve certification in a non-operational or operational position.
• You will be required to satisfactorily complete the US Coast Guard Auxiliary Core training course, including the Basic Qualifications Course, and satisfactorily pass the Vessel Examiner Initial Qualification test before being assigned Vessel Examiner duties.
• You will be required to satisfactorily complete the Vessel Examiner Initial Qualification. 
• For initial qualification as a vessel examiner, trainees must take and pass the current vessel examiner qualification examination. This examination is an open book exam with a three hour time limit and a passing score of 90%.
• Trainees must satisfactorily conduct five vessel safety checks and/or Auxiliary surface facility inspections under the observation of a certified vessel examiner.
• All training for Auxiliarist is free.

Watchstanders

IMPORTANT NOTICE:  This is a volunteer, non-salaried position in the US Coast Guard Auxiliary.  As a volunteer position, there are no required minimum hours that you need to perform.  Each Auxiliarist is expected to provide as much or as little time as they can make available to perform their position tasks and participate in US Coast Guard Auxiliary functions.

This is an Operational position that carries large responsibility.  It requires a significant amount of training and maturity.  When watch standing you will work directly with Active duty Coast Guard personnel.  

• You will answer Coast Guard Station phones
• You will have contact with the general public and Coast Guard members
• You will answer VHF radio transmissions.
• You will maintain radio contact with all Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxiliary units in the area.
• You will control entry to the Coast Guard Station
• You will maintain an accurate log of all events while on the watch.
• If a MAYDAY call comes in, you will handle the communications.

However, to become certified in an operational discipline, Auxiliarists must demonstrate their ability, mobility, and endurance to satisfactorily complete performance-based training and qualification tasks that are based on the procedures outlined in associated qualification guides.
• You should be willing to work as a Watch Stander on a regular basis and/or be available on short notice for fill in work (subject to work and home life).
• You must have the proper uniform, worn with member devices - usually ODUs.
• You must pass a DO (Direct Optional) security check.
• You must be willing to deal with people in stressful situations, follow established protocols, and help effect a positive outcome.

• You will be required to satisfactorily complete the US Coast Guard Auxiliary Core training course, including the Basic Qualifications Course.
• You must successfully complete the Auxiliary Introduction to Risk Management course.
• You must annually complete the Risk Management/Team Coordination Training workshop.  
• You will need to successfully complete the Communication Watch Stander Performance Qualification Standards and pass a qualification board. Note - the PQS and process is exactly the same for Auxiliary members as it is for Active Duty.
• You will need to successfully complete ICS-100.c Introduction to the Incident Command System course (FEMA).
• You will need to successfully complete IS-200.C: Basic Incident Command System for Initial Response course (FEMA).
• You will need to successfully complete ICS-700.b  An Introduction to the National Incident Management System course (FEMA).
• You will need to successfully complete IS-800.D: National Response Framework, An Introduction (FEMA).
• You need to have familiarity with the Coast Guard Station St Inigoes Area of Operation (AOR) and you must successfully pass an AOR test on local charts.
